EMAIL& CRM
Email and CRM is the discipline of turning permission and customer data into a relationship that compounds. Email is the owned channel for speaking to people who already know you; the CRM is the system of record that remembers them. Together they decide how much of the demand you paid for you get to keep.
How we
see it
Most marketing spend goes on finding people. Email and CRM decide what happens after they are found. A customer acquired through search, social or a marketplace is a one-off transaction until someone gives them a reason to return, remembers what they bought and speaks to them as an individual. That is the work of this discipline, and it is why we treat it as the economic engine of a marketing system rather than a channel to be scheduled around campaigns. When retention improves, every acquisition channel becomes more affordable, because each customer is worth more over time.
Our point of view is simple and slightly unfashionable. The foundations matter more than the features. Consent decides how people behave on your list. Authentication and list quality decide whether your mail reaches the inbox at all. Clean, owned CRM data decides whether segmentation, automation and lead scoring tell the truth or merely look busy. Most underperforming programmes do not need a new platform or a cleverer subject line; they need an agreed definition of each lifecycle stage, an owner for the data and a willingness to send less to people who have stopped listening. Technology amplifies whatever sits underneath it, good or bad.
The articles in this hub are arranged so that you can start wherever your problem is. If you are new to the discipline, begin with what email marketing is and how to set a one-page strategy. If your mail is underperforming, start with deliverability and authentication before touching the copy. If you are building journeys, read the guides on automation, welcome series and lifecycle marketing together, because they are one system. If your sales and marketing teams argue about leads, the CRM strategy, lead scoring and data hygiene guides are written for you. Throughout, we avoid invented benchmarks: platform rules and mailbox-provider requirements change, so we explain principles and tell you where to check the current specifics. In India and other mobile-first markets, email increasingly works alongside WhatsApp and SMS, and we address that coordination directly. Every guide ends with practical tools: checklists, calculators and diagnostics you can use with your own numbers.

- 01
Permission is the asset
The list is only as valuable as the consent behind it. How someone joined predicts how they will behave, so treat every signup source as a promise you must keep.
- 02
Fix foundations before features
Authentication, list hygiene and clean data decide results more than templates or tools. Diagnose from the bottom of the stack upwards before rewriting a single subject line.
- 03
Speak to the stage, not the calendar
Lifecycle programmes triggered by what customers do usually outperform broadcasts scheduled for the company's convenience. Build the always-on core first and layer campaigns on top.
- 04
Measure the asset, prove the increment
Judge email and CRM by value per subscriber and movement between lifecycle stages over time, and use holdout groups to separate genuine impact from credit taken for behaviour that would have happened anyway.

- Explainer8 minEmail MarketingThe channel you actually ownEmail marketing is the practice of sending planned and triggered messages to people who have agreed to hear from you, in order to build a relationship that produces revenue over time. Its defining trait is ownership: the list, the consent and the data belong to you, not to a platform that can change the rules overnight.2 diagrams2 tools

- Framework9 minEmail StrategyDecisions before deliverablesAn email marketing strategy is a short set of decisions about what job email does for the business, which people it serves at which moments, what each message must achieve, and how success is measured. It comes before the calendar. Without it, a programme becomes a stream of sends chasing last month's numbers.2 diagrams3 tools

- Guide9 minDeliverabilityEarning the inbox, every sendEmail deliverability is your ability to get messages into the inbox rather than the spam folder or nowhere at all. It depends on technical authentication, the reputation of your sending domain and IP, the quality of your list, and above all on how recipients behave when your mail arrives.2 diagrams2 tools

- How-to8 minSegmentationFewer lists, sharper reasonsEmail segmentation is dividing your list into groups that should receive different messages, based on what people did, what they bought, what they told you and how engaged they are. Good segmentation changes the message, not just the audience. A segment is only worth creating if you will say something different to it.2 diagrams2 tools

- Explainer8 minAutomationRules that work while you sleepMarketing automation is software that carries out marketing actions, such as sending an email, updating a record or alerting sales, when defined conditions are met. It replaces repetitive manual work with rules. It does not replace judgement: an automated bad idea simply reaches more people, faster and without anyone noticing.2 diagrams2 tools

- How-to8 minDrip CampaignsSequences with a pointA drip campaign is a pre-written sequence of emails sent automatically over time to people who enter it through a trigger such as a signup, download or purchase. Each message builds on the last towards one goal. The best drips behave less like a timetable and more like a conversation that listens.2 diagrams2 tools

- How-to8 minWelcome SeriesFirst impressions, by designA welcome email series is the short automated sequence a new subscriber receives right after joining your list. Its job is to deliver what was promised, set expectations, introduce what you stand for and guide the reader to a useful first action. It is usually the most-read mail you will ever send that person.2 diagrams2 tools

- How-to8 minAbandoned CartsRecovering the nearly-soldAbandoned cart emails are automated reminders sent to identified shoppers who added products to their basket but left without buying. They work because they reach people at a moment of proven intent. The best flows diagnose why the shopper left and answer that reason, rather than reflexively offering a discount.2 diagrams2 tools

- How-to8 minEmail CopywritingWriting to one personEmail copywriting is the craft of writing marketing and lifecycle emails that get opened, read and acted on. Good email copy is written to one person, carries one idea and asks for one action. It sounds like a capable human, respects the reader's time and earns the next email by being worth this one.2 diagrams2 tools

- Guide8 minSubject LinesThe promise before the emailAn email subject line is the short promise that tells a reader what is inside and why it is worth their time. Good subject lines are clear, specific and honest about the content. They work with the sender name and preview text as one unit, and they are judged by the clicks and actions they lead to, not by opens alone.2 diagrams2 tools

- Guide8 minEmail DesignBuilt for the inbox, not the deckEmail design is the layout, typography, imagery and code that shape how a message looks and works in the inbox. Good email design is mobile-first, readable without images, accessible, consistent with the brand and resilient across email clients that render HTML in very different ways. Its purpose is to make the action obvious, not to impress.2 diagrams2 tools

- Framework9 minCRM StrategyRelationships before softwareA CRM strategy is the plan for how a business wins, keeps and grows customer relationships, and how its people, processes, data and software support that. The software is the last decision, not the first. Most failed CRM projects fail because nobody agreed what a customer, a stage or a good record actually is.2 diagrams2 tools

- How-to9 minChoosing a CRMFit over feature listsTo choose a CRM, start from your sales or customer process and the questions the system must answer, turn those into weighted requirements, then test a short list of platforms with your own real scenarios and data. Judge fit, integration, total cost of ownership and adoption risk, not the length of the feature list.2 diagrams2 tools

- Framework9 minLead ScoringFit, intent and honestyLead scoring is a method of ranking leads by how likely they are to become customers, so sales and marketing spend time on the right people first. A sound model scores two things separately: fit, meaning how closely the lead matches your ideal customer, and engagement, meaning how much buying intent they have shown recently.2 diagrams2 tools

- Guide8 minLead NurturingBeing useful until they are readyLead nurturing is the practice of building relationships with potential customers who are not yet ready to buy, by giving them useful, relevant information over time until they are. It treats the gap between first contact and purchase as a period to earn trust, not a queue to chase. Done well, it shortens decisions and improves sales conversations.2 diagrams2 tools

- Framework9 minLifecycle MarketingThe right message for the stageCustomer lifecycle marketing is the practice of communicating with people according to where they are in their relationship with you, from first contact to first purchase, repeat purchase, loyalty, risk and lapse. Each stage has one goal: move the person to the next healthy stage. It replaces a single campaign calendar with a set of stage-specific programmes.2 diagrams2 tools

- Guide8 minRetention MarketingKeeping the customers you paid forRetention marketing is the work of keeping existing customers buying, renewing or using your product, and of increasing their value over time. It covers onboarding, repeat-purchase programmes, service recovery, loyalty and win-back. Its foundation is a product and experience worth returning to; marketing can amplify good retention but cannot manufacture it.2 diagrams2 tools

- Guide9 minLoyalty ProgrammesRewarding what you want more ofA loyalty programme is a structured way of rewarding customers for behaviour you want more of, such as repeat purchases, higher spend, referrals or reviews. Good programmes change behaviour profitably and make members feel recognised. Poor ones become an expensive, permanent discount given to customers who would have bought anyway.2 diagrams2 tools

- Guide8 minSMS MarketingShort, urgent and earnedSMS marketing is sending promotional or informational text messages to customers who have agreed to receive them. Text is immediate, personal and hard to ignore, which makes it powerful for urgent, high-value moments and damaging when overused. It is also tightly regulated in most markets, so consent and registration come before creativity.2 diagrams2 tools

- Framework9 minEmail KPIsMeasuring the asset, not the sendEmail marketing KPIs are the measures that show whether your email programme is healthy, engaging and commercially valuable. The useful ones form a hierarchy: list and deliverability health at the base, engagement in the middle and business outcomes such as revenue or retention per subscriber at the top. Open rate, once the headline metric, is now one of the weakest.2 diagrams2 tools

- Explainer8 minTransactional EmailThe messages people wait forTransactional emails are messages triggered by a specific action or event in a customer's relationship with you, such as a purchase, password reset, booking or account change. They are expected, often urgent and frequently read. Their first job is to inform clearly and reliably; any marketing they carry must stay secondary and comply with local rules.2 diagrams2 tools

- Explainer9 minSPF, DKIM, DMARCProving the mail is yoursSPF, DKIM and DMARC are DNS-based standards that let receiving mail servers verify an email really comes from the domain it claims. SPF lists which servers may send for your domain, DKIM adds a cryptographic signature, and DMARC ties both to the visible From address and tells receivers what to do when checks fail.2 diagrams2 tools

- Checklist8 minCRM Data HygieneKeeping the record trueCRM data hygiene is the ongoing work of keeping customer records accurate, complete, consistent, deduplicated and lawfully held. It combines prevention at the point of entry, regular clean-up routines and clear ownership. Clean data is what makes segmentation, automation, lead scoring and reporting trustworthy; dirty data quietly corrupts all of them.2 diagrams3 tools

- Guide9 minPersonalisationRelevance without the creepinessPersonalisation at scale means adapting messages, offers and timing to individual customers' behaviour, needs and context, for thousands or millions of people, through data, rules and modular content rather than manual effort. Its aim is relevance, not cleverness. It is only worth doing where it changes what someone receives in a way they would value.2 diagrams2 tools

EmailQuestions
- What is the difference between email marketing and CRM?
- Email marketing is a channel for sending planned and triggered messages to people who have given permission. A CRM is the system of record for customer relationships, holding contacts, history, deals and interactions across channels. Email uses CRM data to be relevant, and its results flow back into the CRM.
- Where should a business start with email and CRM?
- Start with foundations: authenticate your sending domain, clean your list, agree lifecycle stage definitions and build a welcome series. Then add a post-purchase or onboarding sequence and a recovery flow. Choose or reconfigure a CRM once stages, ownership and minimum data are agreed.
- Is email still worth investing in alongside WhatsApp and SMS?
- Yes. Email remains the owned home for longer, considered and record-keeping messages, while WhatsApp suits conversation and SMS suits brief urgent alerts. The strongest programmes coordinate all three by message type with a shared frequency cap and shared consent records.
- How do I know if my email and CRM programme is working?
- Look at the list and customer base as assets: value per active subscriber, the active share of the list, retention by cohort and the rates at which customers move between lifecycle stages. Use holdout groups to measure the incremental effect of key programmes.
