From ranking pages to supplying answers
Answer engines are any systems that respond to a question with an answer rather than a list: featured snippets and question boxes in search results, voice assistants, and AI summaries and chat assistants. Each needs to find a passage that resolves the question, and each favours content that makes that easy.
AEO is the page-level discipline of being that passage. It overlaps with generative engine optimisation, which is broader and includes reputation and entity work. AEO is about the writing and structure of individual pages: can a machine lift a correct, complete answer from this page in one go?
Write every important paragraph as though it might be the only one anyone reads.
The trade-off nobody likes to mention
If your answer is complete enough to be quoted, some people will read it in the results and never click. That is a real cost, and pretending otherwise is unhelpful. For simple factual questions, being the quoted source may deliver brand exposure but little traffic.
Our view is that the trade-off is still worth making, for two reasons. If you are not the quoted source, someone else will be, and the click is lost either way. And people with deeper needs, the ones most likely to become customers, still click through for detail, examples and next steps. AEO works best when the quotable answer is short and the page behind it is deep.

Writing an answer-ready section
Answer formats should match the question type. A 'what is' question wants a definition sentence that names the thing, its category and its distinguishing feature. A 'how to' question wants numbered steps. A 'which is better' question wants a comparison with criteria. A 'why' question wants a cause, stated plainly, followed by explanation.
Compare scenarios
Answer formats by question type
For 'what is' and 'what does X mean'.
- One sentence: term, category, distinguishing feature
- Follow with an example
- Avoid circular definitions
For 'how to' and 'how do I'.
- Numbered steps, each starting with a verb
- One action per step
- State prerequisites first
For 'X vs Y' and 'which is better'.
- A one-line verdict that depends on the situation
- A table with clear criteria
- When to choose each
For 'why' and 'what causes'.
- State the main cause first
- Then contributing factors
- Then what to do about it
Writing the answer sentence
The answer sentence is the most important sentence on an AEO page. It should be accurate, specific and free of hedging that adds no information. Compare 'There are many factors to consider when thinking about a site migration' with 'A site migration is any change to a website's URLs, platform, structure or domain that can affect how search engines find and rank its pages.' Only the second can be quoted.
Keep it short enough to be read aloud comfortably, since voice assistants may do exactly that. Use the question's own terms so the match is obvious. Then resist repeating the same sentence in different words; the next paragraph should add something.

Questions to answer
Find questions from the 'People also ask' style boxes in search results, from Search Console queries that start with question words, from your sales and support teams, and from forums where your customers talk. Group them by intent as you would in keyword research.
Decide where each question lives. The main question gets the page. Closely related follow-up questions become sections. Distinct questions with their own intent get their own pages. An FAQ block at the end of a page suits genuine short follow-ups, not questions that deserve full treatment.
Technical support for answers
- Clean HTML headings: H2 and H3 elements that reflect the questions, not styled text that only looks like headings.
- Content in the initial HTML: many answer systems do not run JavaScript.
- Lists and tables as real HTML: ordered lists for steps and table elements for comparisons, not images of tables.
- Structured data where relevant: schema markup for organisation, articles, products and other supported types helps systems understand context.
- Visible authorship and dates so systems and readers can judge reliability and freshness.

Voice and conversational queries
Voice assistants and chat interfaces encourage longer, more natural questions: 'what is the best way to remove rust from a bicycle chain without special tools' rather than 'bike chain rust'. Pages that already use natural question headings and answer them directly are well placed for these queries without separate 'voice' content.
In multilingual markets, conversational queries also arrive in mixed languages and local phrasing. Where your customers search that way, answer in the language they use. A clear answer in Hindi or Tamil to a question asked in that language may face far less competition than the equivalent in English.
Mistakes that make pages hard to quote
- Burying the answer below introductions, stories or sales copy.
- Hedging everything: 'it depends' without saying on what.
- Splitting one answer across tabs, accordions or carousels that hide text from the initial view or rely on scripts.
- Answering the question the business wishes had been asked rather than the one searchers ask.
- Using images of text for key definitions, steps or tables.
Each of these is common on corporate sites because pages are written to persuade rather than to answer. AEO does not require abandoning persuasion; it requires putting the answer first and the persuasion after, where readers who want more will find it.
A useful editorial habit is the 'lift test'. Before publishing, copy the first two sentences under each heading into a blank document. If each pair still makes sense, names its subject and answers the heading's question, the page is answer-ready. If not, rewrite until it does. The test takes minutes and catches most structural problems.
Measuring AEO
Measure what you can see directly: featured snippet and question-box presence for priority queries, impressions and click-through rates in Search Console, and citations in AI answers sampled across a fixed set of questions over time. Expect click-through on some definitional queries to fall even as visibility rises; judge those pages on brand exposure and assisted conversions.
Then watch the deeper pages behind the answers. If people who do click spend time, move to related pages and convert, the model is working: the short answer earns attention, and the depth earns the business. Report this alongside other SEO KPIs.
Key takeaways
- 01AEO structures pages so machines can lift a correct, complete answer in one go.
- 02Lead every important section with a direct, self-contained answer, then add depth.
- 03Match answer formats to question types: definitions, steps, comparisons and explanations.
- 04Keep headings, lists, tables and content in clean, server-rendered HTML.
- 05Accept that some answers will not earn clicks, and judge the deeper page on the visits it does earn.
Frequently asked
- What is answer engine optimisation?
- Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that systems which answer questions directly, such as featured snippets, voice assistants and AI answer engines, can extract a clear answer from your page and attribute it to you. It focuses on question-led structure and direct, self-contained answers.
- What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
- AEO focuses on page-level structure and writing that makes answers easy to extract. Generative engine optimisation is broader, covering how AI systems represent your brand overall, including entity consistency and reputation across other sources. In practice the two overlap and most teams pursue both together.
- Does AEO reduce website traffic?
- It can for simple factual queries, because some people read the quoted answer and do not click. But if you are not quoted, a competitor is, and the click is lost anyway. People with deeper needs still click through, so pair short answers with substantial pages behind them.
- How do I win featured snippets?
- Rank on the first page for the query, then answer it directly in a concise passage under a heading that reflects the question, using lists or tables where the format suits. Search engines choose snippets algorithmically, so nothing guarantees one, but clear, accurate, well-structured answers improve your chances.
